When in pairs, the left shisa traditionally has a closed mouth, the right one an open mouth. The open mouth wards off evil spirits, and the closed mouth keeps good spirits in.

From the Edo period, they started to be called "guardian dogs" in general in mainland Japan. Gender is variously assigned to the shisa. History

When a Chinese emissary returned from a voyage to the court at Shuri Castle, he brought a gift for the king, a necklace decorated with a figurine of a shisa-dog. The king found it charming and wore it underneath his clothes. At the Naha Port bay, the village of Madanbashi was often terrorized by a sea dragon who ate the villagers and destroyed their property.

One day, the king was visiting the village, and one of these attacks happened; all the people ran and hid. The local noro had been told in a dream to instruct the king when he visited to stand on the beach and lift up his figurine towards the dragon; she sent the boy, Chiga, to tell him the message.

He faced the monster with the figurine held high, and immediately a giant roar sounded all through the village, a roar so deep and powerful that it even shook the dragon. A massive boulder then fell from heaven and crushed the dragon's tail. He couldn't move, and eventually died.

This boulder and the dragon's body became covered with plants and surrounded by trees, and can still be seen today. It is the "Gana-mui Woods" near Naha Ohashi bridge. The townspeople built a large stone shisa to protect it from the dragon's spirit and other threats. (Used from Wikipedia page, cited above)

At Tomimori Village near Kochinda Town in the far southern part of Okinawa, there were often many fires. The people of the area sought out Saiouzui, a Feng Shui master, to ask him why there were so many fires. He believed they were because of the power of the nearby Mt. Yaese, and suggested that the townspeople build a stone shisa to face the mountain. They did so, and thus have protected their village from fire ever since.

Nariko and Noriko's father was the great Shisa who trapped the Dragon beneath the boulder, and his statue still stands tall in Madanbashi. Their mother was the Shisa that protected the town from the fires that threatened. After Noriko and Nariko, their parents produced three more children, and the statues of the children decorate their village. Noriko takes more after his mother. She was very wise, fast, and the protector of all things good.

The twins, heirs to their family's estate and fortune, were raised and taught the ways of a proper high class demons. These lessons and lifestyle kept them hostage to their fathers strict rules and rigid belief system. Their life focused on all rules, no fun. One of the main rules being, they were not allowed to leave the property. However, like the little rascals they are, they snuck out for short periods of time to explore the land beyond the great walls of their home. They would play with the friendly wildlife of the forest, like rabbits and squirrels, or visit the surrounding village dressed in rags to hide their demon distinguishing features. Often, the elderly women who took pity on the children who couldn’t play with the other children of the village, and gave them lunch and snacks. NO matter how much fun they were having, the children would never take longer than 20 minutes, or they may face the wrath of their father.

The village surrounding the property was always peaceful and they enjoyed what little time out they could get. One outing could cause end to their forbidden freedom for more than 75 years. The two ran across a group of young demons their age, but the children were fighting amongst each other over who would get what type of sweet roll, and a small half-demon caught in the middle of the scuffle. The half demon was nothing more than a pack mule to these fake friends of his, and they were making him carry the snacks. While walking, the half demon slipped, and the rolls scattered onto the ground, and all were ruined. Upset, the demon children abandoned the half demon. Nori watched as his sister helped him up, and they brought him back home to play together.to her home for play time. They all played for weeks and became good friends. Nori recognized when his sister’s affection for the boy grew into a crush, and he would tease her about it like any normal child, but he was happy as long as she was happy.

Their secret friendship wouldn’t last for long, as far too soon father found out about the new blooming friendship, and like most demons, let his detest for half demons move him to reinforce the rules already set. Nariko and Noriko were to stay within the border of the property and were not leave no matter what. The only speck of the outside world they would have would be their tutors in business, nothing else. Their free time was spent learning upper class trades, politics, running a kingdom, how to conduct ceremonies, the fine arts, and the most important for the Shisa breed, learning how to fight and work as a team. Protection was the Shisa dog's main purpose, and it was imperative they learn how to be coordinated and work as though they were one mind. As they grew older, the siblings would tutor siblings in these arts, though, none were as blessed as Nari and Nori in the art of cooperation. Their bond as twins was too strong.

Things would grow worse, as soon after the loss of freedom, did Nori become ill with fever. For a time that seemed to last forever, Nori was bed ridden with a horrible fever. His tutoring was put on hold, and the most well-known healers from across the lands were called in to help him, but none could heal the poor child. Soon, a wise woman came down, and she advised the family to let nature run its course. If the child’s will was strong enough, he would survive this illness, but they just had to wait. And so they did.

Time passed, and with each passing day his fever grew worse and worse. His mother began to go ill herself from the stress, and his father was as irritable as ever. But, a miracle happened. Night, when the moon was full, his fever decreased until it was nothing but a memory. He was not undamaged… the illness had not claimed his life- but it took an aspect important for a demon of his breed; his hearing. From that night forward, Nori would never hear again. Relieved with his survival, but distraught over this new development, his parents put him on a new a special training regimen to compensate for his deafness.

Once their father thought they were prepared, they were finally given the freedom to leave their property. Fallowing his sister, the first thing they did was look her friend and old flame. Sadly, they learned from the other his departure with his family, to look for a better life for themselves. While this depressed her and made her home ridden, Nori explored the village outside. He made friends with the elders of the village, and paid respects at the graves of the women who used to feed them, but every night he would return to his sisters side, never going to far until she was ready to leave.

Eventually they were pushed and encouraged to leave the home, his father wanting them to go out, explore, and gain a reputation like he himself did at their age. They were taught all they can be taught, and now it was their turn to gain experience themselves, and develop their skills further. He believed they were meant for great things and gifted them both with talismans and weapon to help protect themselves along their travels. Though the door is always open for them, their father waits for the day they would become his equal, or greater.

Nariko and Noriko follow Tsuyasatama. Noriko wishes to become strong so he can protect his sister, his friends, and his people, and prove that even though he lost his hearing, it doesn’t mean he can’t be powerful.
